ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team will get their 2021 season underway on Tuesday (Aug. 17) when they travel to Columbia, S.C. for an exhibition match against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
"We are excited to get the season going with a challenging matchup against a quality Division I opponent," said coach Michael Zion. "We have some high expectations for this season, so testing ourselves early in the preseason will be great for our team."
The Trojans finished the abbreviated 2021 spring season with a 5-2-1 record, including a trip to the SAC Tournament Semifinals. Anderson scored eight goals in a quarterfinal victory over Mars Hill, and ended the season winning five of their last six games.
This year's roster includes six freshmen and three newcomers. The 2021 freshmen class features Caleb Rubio (M), Jackson Dresser (M), Ekow Hudson (F), Amos Uber (GK), Nick DeFazio (D), and Tre Jackson (D). Joao Martino, a grad transfer from Portugal, and Vicente Martinez Belloso, a graduate transfer from Erskine College, join an already loaded Trojan defense that finished with four clean sheets last season. Santiago Acre, a transfer forward from Point University, will look to provide a boost to the Anderson attack.
Coach Zion's squad returns four All-SAC honorees from last season in Harry Ward (second team), Alexandre Cox-Ashwood (second team), Agustin Ortiz (honorable mention), and Andres Osorio (honorable mention).
Tuesday's exhibition match against South Carolina is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
