SALISBURY, N.C.--The Trojans (5-0-3) traveled to North Carolina on Saturday for an early afternoon South Atlantic Conference matchup against the Catawba Indians (4-3-1), defeating the host team 3-1 to remain unbeaten on the season through eight contests.
"I thought the team performed well today," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Michael Zion. "The team knew this would be a tough game on the road against a tough opponent, and they stepped up to the challenge."
In minute 17, Anderson took an early lead with Adrian Castillo (Alboraya, Spain) slipping a ball through Catawba's backline to Juan Pablo Lepervanche (Caracas, Venezuela). Lepervanche picked up his first of two goals on the afternoon megging the keeper with a shot to the side netting.
Ten minutes later, Lepervanche doubled the Trojans lead with a free kick about 30 yards out. The direct kick sailed over top of the Catawba wall and keeper, giving the Black and Gold a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the opening half.
"Jumping out to an early lead helped us a lot today," added Zion, "and then it was just about managing the rest of the game, and the guys did that well."
In the 63rd minute, Lepervanche served another free kick to the far side of the box, finding the head of Jonas Zethofer (Vienna, Austria). Zethofer's header was deflected by Catawba's keeper right to the feet of Marc Vila (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) who tucked it away.
The Catawba Indians got one back two minutes later, making the game 3-1. Though they recorded an impressive 19 shots, eight of which game on frame, Catawba's comeback fell short. AU earned its fifth win of the season, remaining unbeaten now through eight matches.
Franco Antoniolli (Cardoba, Argentina) recorded a season-high seven saves in the match.
Catawba earned nine cornerkicks to Anderson's three and committed ten fouls to AU's five.
The Trojans remain on the road to start next week, traveling to Mars Hill for the rescheduled match on Tuesday (Oct. 7).
