ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team picked up their seventh consecutive win on Wednesday (Oct. 20) in thrilling fashion, coming from behind late in the second half to defeat the North Georgia Nighthawks by a score of 3-2. Now, they will be tasked to prepare for South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill on Saturday (Oct. 23) at Spero Financial Field as they honor the 2021 senior class.
Anderson (No. 20) was one of two SAC teams ranked in the latest United Soccer Coaches National Poll, along with Limestone who is ranked 11th.
"It is fantastic to be considered amongst the top programs in the country," said coach Michael Zion. "At this point of the season, this is exactly where we want to be. We still have a long way to go in order to achieve our end goals, but we will use this recognition as fuel to keep pushing ourselves each day!"
The Trojans trailed North Georgia 2-1 for a majority of the second half, until scoring the equalizing goal in the 84th minute when Eloy Allimadi scored his third goal of the season. Two minutes later, Alexandre Cox-Ashwood scored a beautiful goal to propel the Trojans to victory.
"What a great comeback victory for this team," said Zion. "The guys went down a goal in the first half and battled for 60+ minutes to bring the game back even. To go on and take the lead in the remaining minutes was special. Our team was relentless tonight and we showed what we are about!"
Mars Hill will enter the match with a 7-5-1 record, including a 4-4 record within the SAC. The Lions are coming off a 2-1 win at home last weekend against Catawba on Alumni Day.
Sebastian Bertilsson leads the team and is tied for third in the SAC with 11 goals on the season, including a goal in the win over Catawba. Kevonte Willoughby-Williams' eight goals is good for sixth in the conference. Goalkeeper Brennan Whalen is fourth in saves with 41.
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 23) as they play host to Mars Hill for homecoming. Game time is set for 4:30 PM, with video and live stats available at www.autrojans.com.
