MORROW, Ga. - Newcomer Lars Kaula and senior Andre Carle knocked
in a goal apiece to propel Anderson University men's soccer over
USC Aiken, 2-0, on the opening day of the 10th Annual Loch Shop
Shootout at Lake Field on the campus of Clayton State.
With the victory, head coach Michael Zion claims his first
season-opening win of his coaching career and guides the Trojans to
a 1-0 record to open the year. The Pacers, who also began their
2015 campaign on Thursday, fall to 0-1.
Despite Anderson's first clean sheet in a season opener since
2010, the Trojans lost the shot battle, 17-10. Leading the Trojan
attack was Carle with five shots on goal, including four troubling
USC Aiken goalkeeper, Alessandro Gentile. Newcomer Erik Dahlbeck
followed Carle in the category with two shots.
Preserving the shutout was junior goalkeeper Devon Ashy, who
earned the fifth start of his collegiate career. Ashy totaled five
saves on the evening and recorded the first shutout in his three
seasons. Overall, the junior faced 17 shots as USC Aiken's Samuel
Andrews led the team with four.
After rain pushed the start time back over an hour, the teams
started slowly with 41 minutes of scoreless action. In the 42nd
minute, the Pacers were called for a foul inside their box, handing
the Trojans a penalty kick. From there, Kaula, who was making his
Black and Gold debut, knocked his first collegiate goal and gave
Anderson a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the final 45 minutes, Carle put the match away with his 19th
career goal in the 71st minute. For the remainder of the contest,
the Trojan backline sealed the shutout and held the Pacers to just
four shots for the remainder of the evening.
Anderson looks to finish the Loch Shop Shootout with a perfect
2-0 record when it squares off with host, Clayton State, on
Saturday. Kick-off from Laker Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
