HARSTVILLE, S.C.--Anderson Men's Soccer (7-0-4) made the trip to Coker University on Saturday, defeating the Cobras (1-3-6) 2-1 for their fifth conference win of the season.
"It wasn't pretty, but it was gritty," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Michael Zion. "We dug deep, stood tall when it mattered and earned every point of that win."
Trojan striker Jonas Zethofer (Vienna, Austria) recorded his fifth goal of the season in just the sixth minute of action, connecting with a pass from Emmanuel Arkoh, (Barcelona, Spain) beating his defender and sending it home. The assist is Arkoh's third of the season.
The Cobras equalized ten minutes later, and the match remained level for the remainder of the opening half.
Following the intermission, Coker's offense returned to the pitch with a spark, tallying 11 shots in the second 45 compared to AU's four. It was Juan Pablo Lepervanche (Caracas, Venezuela) who found the back of the net, however, giving the Trojans the lead in the 58th minute. A lobbed ball from Marc Vila (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) reached Lepervanche who beat his Cobra defender and scored his fourth game-winner of the season.
Anderson keeper Franco Antoniolli (Cardoba, Argentina) picked up six saves in the win. The Trojans earned four corner kicks, while Coker had seven. Both sides recorded 12 fouls in the contest.
The Trojans will travel to North Greenville next Tuesday (Oct. 21) for the final non-conference matchup of the season. The game is scheduled for 7 PM in Tigerville.
