Zion Earns 100th Career Win; Caro’s Brace Surges Trojans to Victory Over NGU

Box Score

TIGERVILLE, S.C.--A cool October evening would prove to be a monumental night in Anderson Men's Soccer history as the No. 4 Trojans (8-0-4) traveled to face North Greenville (8-3-3) on Tuesday and defeated the Trailblazers for Head Coach Michael Zion's 100th career win at the helm for Anderson.

The victory comes amidst one of the Trojans' best seasons under Zion's tenure, as the Black and Gold have been ranked Top-10 nationally since the first polls of the season—No. 4 for every poll but Week 5 when they dropped to No. 6 for the week.  No. 1 in the Southeast Region also since opening polls, the Trojans are undefeated through 12 games on the season and show no signs of slowing down their momentum.

A four-year letter winner and two-time team captain for the Trojans himself, Zion became Head Coach of his alma mater in 2014, following a four-year stint as an assistant. Now in his 12th year as head coach at AU, Zion has amassed 100 career victories, along with 59 South Atlantic Conference wins. The Trojans have earned 37 All-Conference selections under Zion's leadership, as well as five All-Region honorees.

Tuesday's matchup was the last out-of-conference game for Anderson this season. The first half was one of possession as both teams patiently tried to crack through the defensive front of the other. AU tallied three shots in the opening 45, compared to NGU's five, but the contest was scoreless going into the break.

The second half saw the Trojans bring an explosive energy to the final third, and Julian Caro (Medellin, Colombia) cracked open the scoring in the 60th minute, blasting one into the back of the net. Seven minutes later, Caro doubled the Trojan lead with his first brace of the season. Jace Hicks (Greenville, S.C.) picked up an assist on both goals.

Falling behind by two in a quick span, the momentum of the match began to turn in favor of the host team, and the Trailblazers got one back in the 78th minute. Both squads tallied 11 shots in the second half, but North Greenville was unable to find the equalizer, and the Trojans claimed the 2-1 road victory.

AU is off this coming weekend, but will return home next Tuesday (Oct. 21) for the final home game of the regular season. The Trojans will host Lincoln Memorial for Senior Night. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7 PM.
