LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the second consecutive outing, the
Anderson University volleyball team posted balanced offensive and
defensive efforts en route to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-11) win past
Salem International on the second day of the Bellarmine Volleyball
Classic, Saturday morning at Knights Hall.
Anderson improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Salem
International, which is playing volleyball after a six-year hiatus,
is searching for its first win of the campaign after dropping its
first two decisions at the Bellarmine Classic.
"It definitely feels good to get our second win," said Anderson
head coach Craig Mosqueda. "We started a little slow and then
picked things up offensively and with our ball control. Priscilla
[Irizarry] and Hailey [Pittman] had great matches for us
offensively and Alix [Hooker] and Priscilla were solid
defensively."
Redshirt sophomore Priscilla Irizarry notched her second
straight double-double, handing out a match-high 15 assists and
posting 10 digs to go along with six kills. Senior middle blocker
Hailey Pittman also recorded an impressive line, with six kills in
11 attack attempts for a match-best .545 attack percentage and
added four block assists and five service aces, including three in
the second set. Senior outside hitter Shannon Gillespie recorded
five kills and six digs, while freshman Kendall Vallancourt chipped
in four kills. Senior Alix Hooker came up with a team-high 11 digs,
while freshman Tatianna Grodecky dished out eight assists on the
morning.
The Trojans trailed early in the first set and still trailed
13-11 before evening the score at 14 apiece with Grodecky serving.
AU then reeled off a 7-1 run on the strength of a pair of kills
from Irizarry and an ace from Hooker to take a commanding 21-15
lead and closed the frame by scoring four of the final six
points.
Anderson never trailed in the second set and broke away from a
narrow 11-9 lead with 12 unanswered points, as Pittman recorded
three service aces during the outburst. Gillespie and Vallancourt
also combined for five kills during the surge.
The Trojans struck early and raced out to a 12-3 lead in the
third frame and never looked back, as AU steadily built a 20-7
advantage. Pittman and fellow senior Sarah Eckert led the way with
three kills apiece in the final frame, while Gillespie and redshirt
sophomore Tinsley Hallman each added two kills.
Anderson will look to stay perfect on the season when the
Trojans wrap up their visit to the Derby City with a 5 p.m. contest
versus Mercyhurst.
