ANDERSON, S.C. – The Trojans continued their hot streak at home on Friday night with their third-straight sweep and fifth-straight win to hand Carson-Newman just their third loss of the season by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-21. Anderson moves to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the SAC with the win.
"I liked how we set the tone early on in the match," head coach Todd Hay said. "We weren't to allow a lot of unforced errors to determine how we the match would go. Our block was effective at making them work and our passing was pretty steady all night. While it got a little shaky in set three, some good passes and timely serves helped pull us up. Really proud of the team and their week of practice in preparation for tonight."
After the first set, the Trojans didn't have it easy holding the Eagles off. The last two sets had a combined 21 tie scores and 13 lead changes. Anderson went down by as much as four in the second set and three in the third set but still secured the sweep.
The Trojans held the Eagles - who average a .236 hitting percentage and 13.6 kills per set - to a .079 clip and 9.3 kills per set. Anderson put up a .232 hitting percentage with 41 kills on the night along with seven total blocks.
The Trojan offense was led by sophomore Mia Elder (Leland, N.C.) for the fourth-straight game with 12 kills on a .292 hitting percentage along with two blocks. Seven of her 12 kills came in the first set.
Junior Ava Reeves (Lexington, S.C.) followed up with 11 kills on a .318 clip and one block.
Junior Emily Campbell (Statesville, N.C.) came up with an efficient nine kills and just two errors and a team-high four blocks.
Freshman Jamie Juhnevicz (Taylors, S.C.) led the defense with 18 digs.
Junior Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) dished out 32 assists.
The Trojans stay home early next week when they host Newberry College on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
