Volleyball Stays Hot; Wins Fourth Straight

ANDERSON, S.C. - For the second time in as many years the Anderson volleyball team has opened the season with four consecutive wins after downing Augusta State, 3-1, and blanking Virginia State, 3-0, on the final day of the 2010 AU Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.

The Trojans (4-0) held off visiting Peach Belt-foe Augusta State, 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 25-23 in a close first set, then dropped a disappointing second set before rebounding to take the final two sets to claim the narrow win past the Lady Jaguars. AU freshman Chelsea Olson recorded a team-best .400 attack percentage over the four-set contest, while senior Jamie Lancaster notched a team-best 14 kills, with Olson adding 12. Lindsay Doggett handed out 36 assists in the game and Lancaster punctuated the win with an ace for the final point.

The second match of the day for AU saw the Trojans take control early en route to posting their first shutout of the young season. Anderson broke open a close first set with a 10-3 run while taking advantage of Virginia State errors and went on to claim the 25-10 win. Junior Meagan Murray's strong serves propelled the Trojans to a quick 9-0 lead early in the second set and AU closed with a 12-4 outburst.

Anderson trailed early in the third and final set, but took a lead it would not relinquish at 6-5 and pushed out to a seven-point cushion before claiming the 24-16 win.

"The team did a better job of executing and playing solid defense today," said Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. "I was very proud of the team for the heart and determination they showed in getting this win. Several players stepped up and the seniors showed their experience late in each game. Freshmen Tori Calhoon and Chelsea Olson played a solid match and we are looking forward to watching them grow and continue to improve."

Anderson jumps into South Atlantic Conference action by visiting Newberry College on Tuesday with first serve slated for 7 p.m. at Eleazer Arena. The Wolves participated in the AU Invitational, but did not face the Trojans over the two-day event. Newberry posted a 2-2 record, defeating Virginia State and Augusta State and falling to North Greenville and Southern Wesleyan.
