ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Trojans earned a 3-1 win over Catawba College (8-10, 5-8 SAC) at home on Thursday night by scores of 25-13, 25-11, 20-25 and 25-15. Anderson moves to 16-5 overall and 11-2 in the South Atlantic Conference with their third-straight win.
"Defense was the story of the night for us," head coach Todd Hay said. "I was pleased with our blocking and Jamie was solid at libero. Offensively, we did just enough to keep them at bay and pull away at the end. We look forward to Senior Night tomorrow and honoring Katy and KB for their years of work and commitment to the program."
The Trojans came up with a season-high 13 blocks on the night and held the Catawba Indians to a .000 clip. Anderson came up with eight aces and 45 kills.
Junior Ava Reeves (Lexington, S.C.) led the Trojan offense with 12 kills.
Junior Emily Campbell (Statesville, S.C.) was big up front with a season-high seven blocks along with seven kills and one ace.
Sophomore Maura Kindel (Easley, S.C.) added another seven kills and five blocks.
Freshman Jamie Juhnevicz (Taylors, S.C.) was also big on defense for the Trojans with 21 digs and one ace.
Junior Ellie Nieporte (Boca Raton, Fla.) dished out 40 assists and picked up eight digs.
The Trojan front three were on fire early, with six blocks in the first set. Elder and Kindel had two combined while Campbell had three solo. The Trojans needed just 12 kills to secure the first set as the Catawba Indians struggled with a -.148 clip.
Anderson added three blocks in the second set as they rode Catawba's errors, putting up just nine kills for 21 total on a .319 hitting percentage. The Trojans were well in control for the majority of the set, never dropping a lead after going down 7-6 early. Reeves led the offense with seven kills through two sets.
Catawba stepped up while the Trojans dropped the intensity in set three, going from a .471 clip in set two to a .154 clip in set three. The third set was the only one in which the Catawba Indians hit positively, swinging at a .294 hitting percentage.
The fourth set got off to a rocky start before the Trojans tied things up at ten and went on a 15-5 run to close out.
The Trojans are back home tomorrow, Oct. 31 when they host UVA Wise for Senior Night. Anderson will honor seniors Katy Smith and Kaitlyn Barrett at 6:30 p.m.
