OKATIE, S.C.--Anderson Men's Golf traveled to Okatie, S.C. for the Oldfield Classic hosted by USC Beaufort this week to open their spring campaign. The Trojans were led by junior Sam McMillan (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) who boasted a runner-up finish, while the team landed sixth on the leaderboard.
"Very proud of the way the guys fought this week!" said Head Men's Golf Coach Daniel Coker. "We started poorly the 2nd day and fell behind very quickly, but we played our last 6 holes 7-under to move all the way up to 6th place and beat some good teams."
AU opened the tournament with a +15 first round, before settling in to shoot +6 and +8 for the final 36 holes to finish +29 on the competition. The showing was good for a 6th-place finish of 16 teams. Ahead of Anderson on the board were No. 8 Georgia Southwestern, No. 9 Catawba, No. 6 Wingate, No. 12 Columbus State and Drexel.
McMillan earned his best collegiate individual finish, shooting 73-70-70—213 to close the tournament tied for second of 93 competitors in the field.
"Great playing by Sam with a runner-up finish at –3!" added Coker.
Also earning a Top-25 finish for the Black and Gold was sophomore James Parsons (London, England) who went 76-71-78—225 to finish 25th overall.
"We are excited to clean up some things and head to Greenwood in March."
