CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Using a season-high .337 hitting percentage,
the Anderson volleyball team claimed its second win in three
decisions by sweeping Queens, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-17) in South
Atlantic Conference action, Friday night at the Levine Center.
Led by junior Jessica Harris's career-best .524 hitting
accuracy, Anderson (9-9, 7-5 SAC) opened the second half of the
league's double-round robin schedule by posting a red-hot .452
attack percentage in the second set. With the victory, the Trojans
have won two of their last three decisions and swept the season
series with Queens, which fell to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in the
league with its first loss in three decisions.
Harris recorded a match-high 14 kills and six total blocks, with
sophomore Serena Jackson reaching double-figure kills for the
eighth time this season with 10. Fellow sophomore Marissa Mitter
also posted 10 kills, while reaching double-figure kills for the
fifth time this season. Redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry handed
out a match-best 37 assists, with junior Allison Gaminde adding
four block assists. Emily Conard notched her 15th match with
double-figure digs, as the freshman from Plano, Texas posted a
match-best 16 digs, while junior Tinsley Hallman chipped in 13
digs.
The Trojans scored the first point of the opening set, but
Queens countered by posting a 10-4 outburst to gain its largest
lead of the frame and forcing AU to call a timeout. Following the
pause, Anderson chipped away at the deficit and claimed just its
second lead of the set, at 12-11, behind a 7-1 surge. Harris
recorded two of her kills during the rally, with Irizarry's service
ace giving the Trojans the brief advantage. Queens responded with
three unanswered points, but with the score knotted at 14 apiece, a
block by Harris regained the edge for AU. The set then featured
three ties and a pair of lead changes before Jackson's kill snapped
a 17-17 deadlock and gave the Trojans a lead they would not
relinquish. Anderson steadily built a 24-20 lead and claimed the
three-point win.
The second set featured seven ties, with the Trojans opening a
four-point lead four times, including a 12-8 cushion on a kill from
Hallman. But the Royals refused to go away quietly, as they posted
a 6-2 run to knot the score for the third time, at 14 apiece. After
the Royals garnered a one-point advantage on four occasions, the
Trojans snapped an 18-18 tie on one of Mitter's five kills in the
frame. Anderson then capitalized on two consecutive attack errors
by the Royals and a block assist from Gaminde and Harris to push
out to a 22-18 lead. Queens would get no closer than three in the
final moments, with AU taking the five-point victory.
The Trojans raced out to an early 8-2 lead in the third set,
only to see the Royals respond with a 10-3 outburst to take a brief
one-point advantage. But Anderson answered with a 5-1 run to take a
lead it would not relinquish and went on to claim the eight-point
win behind a .323 hitting percentage.
Anderson will look to build momentum on Saturday when the
Trojans visit Catawba for a rare 5 p.m. contest.
