ANDERSON, S.C. - Despite being outshot by one, Anderson
University women's soccer was unable to keep up with a quick
Florida Southern team as the Trojans fell to the Mocs, 3-0, in
nonconference action Wednesday evening at Trojan Stadium.
The setback snaps AU's brief two-match winning streak to begin
the 2014 season and hands the Black and Gold its first loss.
Florida Southern, which will begin Sunshine State Conference play
in early October, improves to 2-0-1 coming off a 1-1 draw with
South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Mocs, who played 21 players compared to AU's 16, claimed the
shot category, 12-11, but three Anderson shots troubled FSC
goalkeeper Erin Moseley, while five shots from the visitors made AU
goalkeeper Sadie Lancaster work, as the sophomore tabs her first
loss of the year. Lancaster closed the evening with two saves.
After the Trojans committed a foul just outside the 18-yard box,
Florida Southern made the most of the opportunity as Kristy Legoas
flicked a pass to Aubrey Riggins who slotted a shot passed
Lancaster for the match's opening goal. For Riggins, the goal was
her first of the year.
Following the halftime break, the Mocs added to their goal total
immediately as Abby Bravo pushed a shot passed the outstretched
Lancaster in the 47th minute. The goal was started by Ricki
Vetzel's long run down the right side and was fed into the AU box
from her right foot. The tally was Bravo's second goal of the year
and Vetzel's first assist of the young season.
FSC closed the scoring in the 81st minute when Izzy Loyd lofted
a long-range shot over the head of Lancaster for her first score of
the year.
Anderson held its opponents without a corner kick for the night,
while the Trojans tallied four for the night. Leading the offensive
attack was freshman Maddie Volz, who finished with four shots with
one coming on goal. Sophomores Alaina Gay and Paige Gowans-Smith
also fired on Moseley.
The Trojans look to return to the winning track on Saturday when
it opens SAC play at Catawba. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
