CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Errors proved costly as the Anderson
University volleyball team wrapped up its brief two-match road
swing with a five-set loss to Queens, 3-2 (26-24, 22-25, 20-25,
25-18, 9-15) in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon
at Curry Arena.
"This was a tough loss, but we were outplayed today," said
Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. "As a team we have several
areas where we need to grow and we need to continue to play
consistent throughout the set. I believe this will be a lesson for
the team, we will learn from it and get better."
Anderson (12-4, 5-3 SAC) saw its win streak halted at three,
while falling to Queens for just the fourth time in 21 matchups.
The Royals snapped a six-match skid with the victory, while
improving to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Senior middle blocker Hailey Pittman led the Trojans' offensive
attack with 12 kills and posted a match-best .480 hitting
percentage. She also added six blocks on the afternoon. Freshman
Marissa Mitter tallied nine kills and seven digs, with senior
outside hitter Shannon Gillespie notching seven kills and 15 digs.
Sophomore Priscilla Irizarry and freshman Tatianna Grodecky each
handed out 15 assists, with Irizarry nearly recording her seventh
double-double of the season with nine digs. Senior libero Alix
Hooker notched 10 digs on the afternoon.
Anderson hit.375 in the opening set, as the Trojans rallied from
an early deficit to outlast the Royals. Trailing by four, at 8-4,
AU rallied to knot the score at nine apiece, with Mitter collecting
a pair of kills. Queens quickly regained a 12-9 edge before the
Trojans countered with a 7-2 surge to claim a brief 16-14
advantage. Trailing 22-21, Pittman sparked a rally with a kill,
while freshman Kendall Vallancourt and sophomore Jessica Harris
followed with a block. After the Royals' Katie Schoenrock
sandwiched a pair of kills around Vallancourt's point, AU
capitalized on a pair of Queens' errors to take the win.
AU pushed out to a 12-7 lead in the second frame and held the
advantage until QUC battled back to take a 20-18 edge on the
strength of seven unanswered points. The Trojans evened the score
at 20 apiece on a service ace from Gillespie, but AU was unable to
overtake the Royals, as Queens held on for the win.
The Trojans were unable to overcome seven errors in the third
set, hitting just -0.083 for the frame. Despite the miscues,
Anderson garnered an early 8-5 lead behind Pittman and Grodecky's
strong serves. However, the Royals stayed within striking distance
and eventually snapped a 20-20 tie with five consecutive points to
claim the set.
The Trojans fell behind early in the fourth set, but rallied to
force a fifth set. Trailing 11-7, AU rattled off a 9-1 run with
Hooker providing the serves. Irizarry ignited the outburst with a
kill and added three block assists, with Pittman contributing four
block assists and a kill to give the Trojans a 16-12 lead. After
the Royals evened the score at 16-16, AU again countered with an
8-1 surge to take control of the frame.
Queens capitalized on early AU errors in the fifth set, raced
out to a 7-3 lead and the Trojans were unable to recover. AU
trimmed the deficit to just 9-7, but was unable to climb any
closer, as the Royals answered with three straight points to regain
the four-point lead and hold the Trojans at bay.
Anderson opens a season-high four-match conference homestand on
Tuesday, when Newberry invades the Abney Athletic Center for a 7
p.m. first-serve.
