CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A second half goal by freshman Emily Perez
opening the scoring, but Anderson University women's soccer was
unable to keep the clean sheet, as the Trojans tied with Queens,
1-1, Wednesday night at Dickson Field.
For the match, AU's offense came alive for the final 65 minutes
of the match as all 10 of its shots came in the second half and in
overtime. Along with Perez, freshman Helena Moore and senior
Krystal Goss each had two shots apiece to lead the team. Keeping
the Trojans in the match was senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp who
made several key saves throughout the night. Neipp finished the
match with five saves.
"I'm really proud of our girls tonight, it's tough to come out
and play on turf for the first time against a quality opponent,"
head coach Samar Azem said. "We're starting to piece some things
together and we're becoming more of an attacking threat."
After going into the locker rooms for halftime goalless,
Anderson (2-3-2, 1-0-2 SAC) struck first in the 62nd minute when
Krystal Goss fed a long pass into the Queens (5-1-2, 1-0-2 SAC)
box, which found an open Emily Perez. Perez took a few steps and
drilled a shot past Royal goalkeeper Kelsey Seretis for her second
goal of the season.
Queens responded when QU's Brooke Foil's pass bounced around in
the Trojan box and Kelli Gottry scored the equalizer and her fourth
tally of the season. The game-tying goal was the final goal of
regulation, as both teams were unable to find a game-winner within
the 90 minutes.
Both overtime periods were balanced throughout, but it was a
save by Neipp in the 92nd minute off a shot by Caitlyn Rodrigues
that kept Queens from the win. Rodrigues tried to beat Neipp to her
right, but the Anderson, S.C. native gloved the shot to preserve
the draw. With the draw, Neipp matches AU's overall record of
2-3-2.
"We wanted the win tonight, but as a team, we showed a lot of
heart and that's something any coach would be proud of," Azem said.
"To play hard for the full 110 minutes, I couldn't be more
proud.
Anderson continues its conference schedule on Saturday when it
travels to Mars Hill. Kickoff is set for noon.
