Queens Edges Trojans in Evenly-Matched Contest

ANDERSON, S.C. - Sophomore Shannon Gillespie notched her third double-double with 16 digs and 10 kills, but visiting Queens defeated Anderson, 3-0, (27-25, 25-20, 25-18) in nonconference volleyball action Tuesday night at the Abney Athletic Center.

Queens improved to 4-4 on the season, while Anderson (6-2) had its home win streak halted at two.

The first set featured 13 tie scores, with neither team able to build more than a four-point advantage in the opening frame, but the Royals overcame a 25-24 deficit with three consecutive points to claim the first set.

The Trojans jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second frame, but Queens refused to go away and rallied with five straight points to climb within one. AU answered to push back ahead, 12-10, but the Royals took their first lead of the set at 13-12.

The Trojans briefly regained the edge at 14-13, and neither team was able to gain more than a one-point lead until Queens reeled off five straight to take a 24-20 edge.

Queens used an 11-3 run in the third and final set to break open a tight contest and build a 21-13 lead, the largest of the night by either team and went on to win the set, 25-18.

Gillespie and Hailey Pittman each recorded 10 kills on the night, while sophomore Alix Hooker shared game-high honors with 17 digs and Kelley Lacey posted a season-high 12 digs. Meghan Cautero dished out 34 assists.

Anderson opens South Atlantic Conference action at Brevard on Friday. First-serve versus the Tornados is slated for 7 p.m.
