ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by a balanced attack, the Anderson
volleyball team earned wins past North Greenville (25-16, 24-26,
25-21, 25-19) and Southern Wesleyan (25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 25-20) by
identical 3-1 margins on the opening day of the AU Invitational
Friday at the Abney Athletic Center.
"We played well overall but still have some growing pains" said
Anderson head coach Craig Mosqueda. "We need to improve in areas of
execution and intensity. That is one area I feel will be crucial to
this team's development."
Anderson collected a win in game one, then dropped the second
game of both matches before bouncing back to earn the victories en
route to improving to 2-0 early in the 2010 campaign.
Five Trojans notched double-figure kills on the afternoon, led
by senior Jamie Lancaster's 19 and freshman Tori Calhoon's 18
kills. Lancaster also led AU with her .378 attack percentage, while
sophomore Tiffany Rowe posted a .353 percentage.
"We played four true freshmen tonight and all four played
significant time and had a positive debut. Our seniors (Lancaster,
Mullaney and Doggett) provided the much-needed stability for our
young team," added Mosqueda.
Freshman Hayley Hoover added a team-high 40 assists and Lindsay
Doggett was close behind with 39 on the day. Senior Adria Mullaney
recorded a team-best 28 digs for AU and Rowe notched 11 blocks.
The Trojans host Peach Belt-foe Augusta State Saturday at 9
a.m., then face Virginia State at 1 p.m. Both matches are available
via video stream.
