ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson volleyball team took two wins on
day two of the AU Invitational, downing Virginia State, 3-0,
(25-14, 25-7, 25-14) and holding off Southern Wesleyan, 3-1,(22-25,
25-16, 25-18, 26-24) Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic

knocked off Virginia State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-7, 25-14) as juniors
Jamie Lancaster and Adria Mullaney combined for 25 kills and
impressive hitting percentages of .529 and .533, respectively. "We
came out flat and unemotional in the first match." said Anderson
head coach Craig Mosqueda. "It was good to get the win, but as a
team we need to learn how to play with a high level of intensity
all the time." Behind sophomore Katie Rich's serving, Anderson
(3-0) grabbed an early 12-5 advantage in the first set, forcing VSU
head coach Linda Person to call a timeout. The break momentarily
slowed AU's attack, as the visiting Trojans scored five of the next
six points, but the AU Lady Trojan's recovered to claim a 21-12
lead and collected the 25-14 victory in the first set. The second
set saw AU race out to a quick 5-1 lead on the strength of
consecutive service aces from Mullaney and not look back, claiming
a 25-7 win. The native of Tampa, Fla., notched eight aces on the
morning, including three in the second set, while Lancaster was a
perfect 4-for-4 in attacks. The third set began with "fives" as AU
grabbed a 5-0 lead, then Virginia State answered with a 5-0 run of
its own and the Lady Trojans responded to garner a 10-5 advantage,
eventually pushing out to a 20-11 lead before closing the match by
scoring five of the next six points. Freshman Paulette Rivers
posted a stellar .857 hitting percentage, gathering six kills in
seven attempts on the morning, while Lindsay Doggett collected a
match-high 20 assists. Rivers also recorded an impressive four solo
blocks versus the visiting Trojans. Southern Wesleyan took the
first set, 25-22, after AU sprinted to a quick 8-3 lead. Following
a timeout by Warriors' head coach Derek Schmitt, SWU went on a 10-3
run to go up by two points. The set was tied three times after the
break, but AU was unable to regain the advantage. The second frame
saw AU snap an 8-8 tie by scoring seven unanswered points and go on
to claim a 25-16 win. Southern Wesleyan took the first point of the
third set, but the Lady Trojans took 12 of the next 14 and held off
SWU, 25-18. Anderson ran out to a commanding 17-8 advantage in the
fourth and deciding set, only to see the Warriors chip away,
eventually knotting the score at 19-19 and grabbing a brief
one-point lead at 20-19. But AU rallied and claimed the hard-fought
26-24 win, with the final point coming on a block by teammates
Tiffany Rowe and Shelby Netherton. Lancaster led the way with 23
kills, while Mullaney notched 15 kills. Doggett again led the squad
with 20 assists. The Lady Trojans are back in action at the Wingate
Classic, Friday and Saturday, where they'll face St. Augustine's
and Wingate twice.
