BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Paced by two first-half goals, the
second-seeded Anderson men's soccer team defeated Carson-Newman,
2-1, in first round action of the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's
Soccer Tournament hosted by Lees-McRae Friday afternoon at the
Avery (N.C.) High School Field. Friday the 13th proved to be
unlucky for Carson Newman, the No. three seed, while Anderson,
seeing its first action on the pitch in nearly two weeks, wasted no
time getting on the scoreboard first, courtesy of a Lasse Sohrweide
goal less than nine minutes into the match. The Flensberg, Germany,
notched his 13th goal of the season when he laced a one-touch
volley past Carson-Newman keeper Jordan Moore after taking a cross
from teammate Jorgen Hals. In the Trojans' first-ever appearance in
the NCAA Tournament, AU carried a 2-0 lead into halftime, following
sophomore Dan Bowers' score at the 40:33 mark. Bowers controlled a
header, brought the ball down and worked his way past two defenders
before slipping it past Moore, who had ventured away from the net.
Carson-Newman, winner of 10 of its last 11 matches entering today's
contest pulled to within one midway through the second half on Adam
Thomas' score, but the Trojans held off a late flurry of attempts
from the Eagles to improve to 13-2-3 on the season. Carson-Newman
fell to 14-5-1. The Eagles outshot Anderson, 18-9, and held an 8-2
advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Lukas Hesse went the distance
for AU between the pipes, recording seven saves on the
afternoon.Anderson advances to face the winner of the No. 1 seeded
Lees-McRae/Wingate contest played later tonight. Kick-off for that
match is slated for Sunday at 2 p.m. Game Stats Season
