Men’s Tennis Splits Weekend with Win Over Lions, Loss to No. 21 Bulldogs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANDERSON, S.C.--The Trojans hosted back-to-back league matches this weekend, welcoming Mars Hill on Saturday morning and No. 21 Wingate on Sunday afternoon. Anderson earned their first South Atlantic Conference win with a 4-0 victory over the Lions, before dropping a 4-0 decision to the nationally-ranked Bulldogs.

AU opened Saturday's match winning the doubles point with Court 2 and 3 victories from Mathis Collignon (Les Pavillons Sous Bois, France)/Sky Thavornchaisophon (Bangkok, Thailand) and Wynn Shioi (Las Vegas, Nev.)/Spencer Dorosheff (High Springs, Fla.).

The Trojans carried the momentum into singles play, with Shioi and Dorosheff both earning straight-set wins to add to Anderson's point total. Hampton Goldman (Greenwood, S.C.) clinched the sweep for the home team, also picking up consecutive sets on his court. The Trojans secured their first SAC win in dominant fashion.

Moving into Sunday, Anderson hosted No. 21 Wingate, who won the doubles point over the Black and Gold with wins at Courts 1 and 2.

Despite dropping the doubles, the Trojans all battled within their singles matches. AU picked up Set 1 wins on Courts 2, 3, 4 and 5 from Collignon, Shioi, Dorosheff and Thavornchaisophon respectively. The Bulldogs rallied back, however, and won back-to-back sets to earn wins over Shioi and Thavornchaisophon and boost the score to 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

On Court 1, Vicent Fenollar (Alicante, Spain) dropped his first set but bounced back to take Set 2. The final set came down to a tiebreaker which ended favoring Wingate to clinch the victory.

Goldman, Collignon and Dorosheff's matches were all left unfinished.

The Trojans now enter a two-match away stint, traveling to Carson-Newman on Thursday (March 26) and Emory & Henry on Saturday (March 28). Both matches are set to begin at 11 AM.
