WINGATE, N.C. – Anderson men's tennis (9-5, 2-3 SAC) was defeated 4-0 by No. 25 Wingate (7-0, 4-0 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at Monroe High School. AU brought a spirited effort to the courts, but the Bulldogs proved too strong in their fourth straight win in the series.

In doubles competition, Wingate earned the opening point of the match with 6-3 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At No. 2, junior Mathis Collignon and sophomore Sky Thavornchaisophon were poised to extend their lead to 5-3, holding a 4-3, 40-0 advantage when play was halted.

The Bulldogs maintained their level into singles play, securing wins at No. 6, No. 3, and No. 4, though the last match was decided in a third set.

When play was stopped, a pair of Trojans had forced third sets despite dropping the first. Sophomore Wynn Shioi shook off a 6-1 defeat to claim the second set 7-5. Junior Hampton Goldman did the same, fighting back to dominate the second set 6-1. He was tied 2-2 in the third at the time of the stoppage. Wingate held a lead at No. 1 in the only other match that went unfinished.

UP NEXT

After a week off for spring break, the Trojans return to the court for a road match against Mars Hill (0-4, 0-1 SAC) on Saturday, March 22, approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the women's match at the Hart Tennis Complex.
