MARS HILL, N.C. – Anderson men's tennis (11-5, 3-3 SAC) moved to 2-0 after spring break, beating Mars Hill (2-9, 1-5 SAC) by a 5-0 final score on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Tennis Center.
"I'm proud of the guys for going out and securing another conference win," AU Assistant Coach Kate Drosieko said after the win. "We've done exponentially better than last season, and I know they'll continue to push towards their goals that they set as a team. We've got Limestone next, and I am excited to see how the guys will fight it out against the Saints!"
AU began the match by taking a spirited doubles point. Jackson Lucas and Wynn Shioi held serve to complete a 6-4 victory at No. 1, then the No. 3 team of Patrick Cronin and Vicent Mico closed out a 6-3 decision to clinch the point. No. 2 was left unfinished while on serve. Mars Hill led 5-4.
The Trojans didn't look back in singles play. Poojith Reddy quickly put the second point on the board for AU, winning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. Sky Thavornchaisophon erased a 5-2 second-set deficit, then won the set tiebreak in dominant fashion, 7-0. His 6-0, 7-6(0) win left the Trojans one point from victory.
AU only needed one match win to clinch the dual, but they got two. Mico and Shioi each finished off their straight-set wins just seconds apart, ending the match and giving the Trojans a 5-0 victory.
At the time of the clinch, Hampton Goldman had battled back to split sets, and held a 2-0 lead in the deciding set. Mathis Collignon was locked in a competitive match that was in a set tiebreak.
UP NEXT
AU is back home at the Trojan Tennis Complex on Tuesday, March 25 for a matchup with Limestone (4-4, 3-3 SAC). The Trojans and Saints will compete following the completion of the women's match, which is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Last season, Limestone defeated AU 5-2.
