ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson men's tennis (8-3, 1-1 SAC) secured a 4-1 victory in its SAC home opener on Wednesday afternoon at the Trojan Tennis Complex against the Coker Cobras (2-4, 0-1 SAC).
"The guys played a great match at home today and executed," AU Head Coach Joey Eskridge said after the win. "We got the doubles point and everybody fought hard. Senior Patrick Cronin came through, clinching it 6-3 in the third [set]. Just a great team effort, proud of the boys. Giving all of the glory to God, because He is the one that made it happen. Go Trojans!"
The Trojans won a hotly contested doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Mathis Collignon and Sky Thavornchaisophon struck first with a 6-3 win, then Patrick Cronin and Vicent Mico clinched the point with an identical 6-3 win at No. 3. Jackson Lucas and Wynn Shioi were locked in a tight battle at the top spot, and led 6-5 when play was stopped.
Coker struck first in singles play, taking a straight-set decision at No. 4. But the Trojans responded quickly. Mico made quick work of his opponent at the No. 3 position, in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Collignon was the next Trojan to earn a point, in 6-1, 7-5 fashion at the top spot. The Les Pavillons Sous Bois, France native reversed a 5-4 second-set deficit to a 6-5 lead, then held serve to finish off the win.
With the Trojans just a point away from victory, Cronin stepped up and won a match that went the distance, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, giving AU their first SAC win of the season.
Shioi and sophomore Poojith Reddy's matches were still in progress when the match was clinched. Reddy won his first set, and trailed 6-5 in the second set at the time of stoppage. Shioi had forced a deciding set on court 2.
UP NEXT
The Trojans hit the road to take on the 22nd-ranked Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters on Saturday, March 1st at 1:30 p.m. in Harrogate, Tennessee. LMU defeated AU a season ago by a 4-3 score.
