Trojans Sweep Saints in Sunday Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Returning to conference action after picking up a midweek win, the Anderson University (14-14, 6-11 SAC) baseball team was able to make a statement with a doubleheader sweep of Limestone (16-14, 8-9 SAC) on Sunday, March 24.

Sophomore Gray Wells (Chapin, S.C.) and senior JC LeGrand (Lugoff, S.C.) were each able to post a pair of RBIs in the opening contest of the day, helping the Trojans to a 5-3 win in the opening contest. Graduate Ben Thornton (Greer, S.C.) picked up the win going five and two thirds with a pair of strikeouts while senior Ryan Brash (Aiken, S.C.) notched the save with four punchouts. In the second game, a trio of Trojans posted RBIs in the contest, leading to a 6-3 win for the Black and Gold. Junior Ben Smith (Cleveland, Tenn.) tossed a gem in the night cap allowing just three runs over six and a third.

GAME ONE: Anderson 5, Limestone 3

Anderson kicked off the scoring in the contest in the top of the second inning as junior Luke Poole (Greenwood, S.C.) blasted a double down the right field line to bring around a run. However, Limestone was able to respond in the bottom of the frame to even up the score. The same would occur in the fourth inning as the Trojans brought in a pair of runs of a single by LeGrand with the Saints answering in the bottom half, tied 3-3 after four complete.

All the scoring would remain on the top line of the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest as the Trojans were able to plate a single run in the fifth off a Wells RBI-single before Wells was also able to add another run to the Trojans final tally of 5-3 in the top of the eighth with a solo shot to right field that finished off the contest.

GAME TWO: Anderson 6, Limestone 3

The Trojans were the only ones to post runs on the board over the opening six innings of the night cap as they added a pair of runs in the third off a pair of miscues by the Saints defense. The Black and Gold added four more runs in the fifth inning, two of which came off of miscues on the part of the Saints again with the final two coming off RBIs by freshman Carson Molinaroli (Summerville, S.C.) and junior Brandon Gibbs (Columbia, S.C.), extending their advantage to 6-0.

Limestone did mount a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh with a final gasp and was able to tally a trio of runs to the scoreboard, but the Trojans were able to stop their comeback there, picking up the series with 6-3.

The two teams return to action tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. as the Trojans look for their first conference series sweep of the season.
