Timely Hitting; Solid Pitching Propels Trojans Past Warriors

Box Score

ANDERSON, S.C. – Senior Carlos Hernandez belted a two-run home run and grad student Jordan Montgomery laced a three-run double, while a half-dozen Trojan pitchers limited Southern Wesleyan to five hits, as the Anderson baseball team got back in the win column with a 6-1 victory, Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson improved to 2-2 on the young season, while Southern Wesleyan dropped its second straight decision and fell to 2-2.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Junior Brayden Owens posted three singles and drove in a run in four at-bats, while Montgomery finished the afternoon with the crucial three-RBI double. Hernandez notched the Trojans' first round-tripper of the season with his first-inning, two-out shot over the left-field fence. Justin Fox was 2-for-3 on the day, with a double and a single, while also reaching base after getting hit by a pitch.

PITCHERS
True freshman Cole Davis drew the midweek start and allowed just one earned run on two hits, while walking two batters and striking out one over three innings of work. Senior Nathan Ledford (1-0) earned the win in his second relief appearance of the season and issued a pair of walks, while fanning one Warrior over two innings. Austin Mercado, Cory Ritchie, Kaleb King and Corey Loggings each tossed an inning of relief and held SWU scoreless over the final four innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Wesleyan's Chance Fogel led off the game with one of his three walks on the afternoon and came around to score on junior Marty Grisso's one-out single through the left side to give the Warriors an early advantage.

But Fox led off the home half of the first inning with a single to the left side and scored two outs later, when Hernandez hammered his seventh career home run as a Trojan – just beyond Grisso's outstretched arm – who ran out of real estate at the fence in left-center.

Following three scoreless innings, the Trojans broke the game open by sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs – three on Montgomery's clutch two-out, bases-loaded double just inside the first-base bag. The Cary, N.C., native moved into scoring position on SWU's throw to the plate and scored AU's fourth run of the frame when Owens lofted a single to left.

ANDERSON STAT OF THE DAY
Trojan hurlers held Southern Wesleyan without an extra-base hit and walked just four of the 36 batters they faced.
