Stellar Pitching and Timely Hitting Propels Trojans Past Top-Seeded Catawba in SAC Baseball Tournament

Box Score

KODAK, Tenn. – Sophomore hurler Austin Todd tossed a complete-game, three-hit gem to help lead the eighth-seeded Anderson baseball to a stunning, 4-1, upset of top-seeded Catawba on the second day of the 2018 Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship, Friday afternoon at Smokies Stadium.

Anderson improved to 24-27 with its 10th victory in 14 games and will face the loser of the Lincoln Memorial/Carson-Newman contest, which is slated for later tonight, Saturday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. Catawba (27-22), the six-time regular-season SAC champion, will face No. 2 seed Wingate Saturday at noon.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Junior Jackson Strange was 1-for-3 on the afternoon and ignited a four-run eighth inning with a leadoff double to the gap in left-center. Freshman Trevor Weisner also notched one of AU's four hits on the afternoon with a single in the eighth inning. Senior William Thomas was 1-for-4 and drove in two runs with an eighth-inning single, while classmate Tyler Miller added a first-inning single and also reached on a walk.

Todd improved to 5-4 on the season by notching the Trojans' third complete game of the season and posted AU's second straight stellar effort on the mound. The right-hander had a perfect game through 7 2/3 innings and flirted with a shutout until allowing an unearned run in the ninth inning. He surrendered three hits over the final two innings, while striking out five Catawba Indians on the day and did not issue a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED
While Todd was holding the Catawba bats silent, the Trojans were also quiet at the plate, with Miller notching AU's only hit – a single - through seven innings.

But the Trojans' bats came alive in the eighth, as AU sent 10 batters to the plate during the decisive inning and plated four runs.

STAT OF THE GAME
The starting pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts through seven innings.
