Trojans Drop Doubleheader at Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn. – The Anderson University baseball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Carson-Newman by a 26-12 count in the opener, and fell 9-1 in the nightcap, Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.

Anderson fell to 8-16 overall and 5-7 in conference play with its fourth straight setback, while Carson-Newman improved to 17-9 and 9-3.

Senior William Thomas notched a pair of doubles and a single in six trips to the plate, while junior Jackson Strange was 3-for-5 in the opener with a two-run double, a pair of singles and a walk. Sophomore Dillon Carpenter added a double, two singles and a walk, while scoring three times. Senior Tyler Miller was 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and a walk.

Junior right-hander Will Gee (2-3) absorbed the loss after allowing seven runs on one hit in 1/3 of an inning. The Blackville, S.C., native walked four batters.

Game #2
Carson-Newman 9, Anderson 1
Redshirt freshman Chandler Castleberry was 2-for-3, with a double and a single in the nightcap, while Brandon Odachowski added a pair of singles.

Senior Andrew Dill (1-2) suffered the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two Eagles and walked four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
Carson-Newman jumped on top with nine runs in the first two innings, while the Trojans countered with three in the fourth frame. But the Eagles answered with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth to open a 12-3 lead.

The Trojans scored a solo run in the top of the fifth and three more in the sixth, but Carson-Newman posted three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 18-7 with three innings remaining.

AU added three runs in the seventh, while the Eagles added one in the seventh and seven more in the bottom of the eighth. AU posted a pair of runs in the ninth to round out the scoring.

Game 2
Carson-Newman scored solo runs in both the first and second innings and pushed out to a five-run lead with three more in the third inning. The Trojans got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Castleberry singled through the left side with one out and crossed the plate two batters later on Strange's single to right-center.

The Eagles added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to set the final score.

Trojans hitters recorded six doubles on the day, while AU hurlers fanned 11 batters.

Anderson will look to get back in the win column when the Trojans travel to Limestone on Wednesday. First-pitch versus the Saints is scheduled for 6 p.m.
