Late Surge Not Enough as Trojans Drop Series Opener at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Anderson rallied for five runs over the final three innings, but was unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped a 9-6 South Atlantic Conference decision to Carson-Newman, Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.

Anderson fell to 8-14 overall and 5-5 in conference action with its second loss in as many days, while Carson-Newman improved to 15-9 and 7-3 by snapping a three-game skid.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Senior William Thomas was 3-for-5 on the afternoon, with three singles and scored twice, with sophomore Matthew Overton going 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk. Sophomore Alex Medlin added a pair of singles and an RBI, while sophomore Dillon Carpenter posted a run-scoring single and a two-run double. Junior Jackson Strange added a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Sophomore John McMicking (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in four innings on the mound. The right-hander struck out two and walked two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles jumped on top early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, while Overton led off the second frame with a single through the right side and scored on Medlin's clutch two-out single.

Carson-Newman added a pair of runs in the fourth inning and boosted its lead to 9-1 by posting four more runs in the fifth.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Strange clubbed his third homer of the season over the fence down the left-field line and the Trojans trimmed the deficit to four with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Thomas led off with a single and senior Tyler Miller followed by pulling a double down the left-field line. Thomas crossed the plate on Carpenter's single and Miller scored on Brandon Odachowski's sacrifice fly.

Carpenter drove in two more runs with a two-out double to the gap in left-center in the top of the ninth to pull AU within 9-6, but the Trojans were unable to get any closer.
