Baseball Stumbles on Road at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Anderson University baseball team equaled a season-high with 16 hits, but opened a four-game road swing with a 10-7 nonconference loss to Limestone, Tuesday night at Founders FCU Stadium.

Anderson (5-10) has dropped three of its last four decisions, while Limestone (12-6) has won three of its last four and improved to 12-3 at home on the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Shortstop Jackson Strange was 4-for-5 on the day, with a pair of doubles and a pair of singles. He drove in two runs and scored twice. Zach McIlroy added three singles and a walk in six trips to the plate, with Dillon Carpenter posting a pair of singles and a walk. Senior Xavier Peralta was 2-for-5 at the plate, with two singles and a walk. Junior Tyler Miller also notched a pair of singles and a walk, while Willian Thomas added a single and a triple.

Christian Carpenter (1-1) drew the start on the mound and suffered the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. He struck out one batter and did not issue a free pass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. Anderson closed the gap with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Peralta beat out an infield single with one out and crossed the plate with the Trojans' first run when Strange doubled to the gap in left-center with two outs. Catcher Bryce Patrick brought Jackson Strange home with a timely single to right-center.

Limestone increased its lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the third and a solo run in the fourth frame.

Miller led off the fifth inning by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman and Peralta brought him home with as clutch two-out single.

The Saints added three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and built a 9-3 advantage before AU countered by batting around and scoring three times in the top of the seventh. The Trojans capitalized on four singles, a walk, a wild pitch and a hit batter to pull within 9-6.

Limestone finished its scoring with another run in the bottom of the seventh, while the Trojans added a ninth-inning run when McIlroy's two-out single plated Carpenter.

UP NEXT
Anderson will get back in South Atlantic Conference action this weekend, when the Trojans visit Wingate for a three-game series. First-pitch for Friday's opening game is set for 6 p.m.
