Trojans Unable to Hold off Wolves

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Anderson University baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision to Newberry in nonconference action, Sunday afternoon at the Wolves' Smith Road Complex.

Anderson slipped to 2-2 on the young season, while Newberry improved to 3-4 on the season by taking two-of-three from the Trojans over the weekend.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sophomore Bruce Patrick posted a pair of singles on the afternoon, with junior Michael Rochester adding a single and an RBI-double. Freshman Dillon Carpenter was 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and a solo home run in the eighth inning. Junior Tyler Miller reached base three times in five trips to the plate with a pair of singles and a walk to lead off the game.

Senior right-hander Ryan Owens garnered the start on the mound and allowed two earned runs in six innings, while striking out five and not walking a batter. Senior Erik Markwat (0-1) absorbed the loss while surrendering three earned runs and issuing a walk while facing three batters in the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, with Miller leading off with a walk and moved to third when William Thomas, who scored twice on the day, reached on an error. Miller crossed the plate with the game's first run when Rochester singled through the left side and Rochester scored when Jackson Strange bounced out to shortstop.

AU increased its lead to 4-0 with another pair of runs in the fifth inning. Stephen McKnight led off the frame with his third walk of the season and moved to second on Patrick's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Thomas singled to right-center to plate McKnight and Rochester doubled to left to bring home Thomas.

Newberry countered with solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings, then erupted for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, while sending 11 batters to the plate.

The Trojans got one of the runs back on Carpenter's one-out homer in the eighth, but were unable to push across another run.
