Men's Tennis Falls to Newberry in SAC Tournament; 5-2

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson University men's tennis was defeated by No. 5 seed Newberry at the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon, 5-2, to end the Trojans 2016 campaign.

The Trojans finish the year with a 13-7 overall record while Newberry improves to 19-5 moving on to face No. 1 seed Tusculum at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Newberry jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion with the Wolves tandem of Fernado Espana and Fernando Tous earning the first point, defeating Aljaz Cajzek and Mateo Rivas, 8-2, at the No. 1 position. Newberry earned point number two with duo Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins winning, 8-5, over Juan Carracedo and Inaki Iriberri at the No. 3 spot. Trojan pairing Nicolas Ascarrunz and Paul Michael Calhoun battled hard but fell, 9-8, to Gustavo D'Ascenzi and Guillermo Ortega at the No. 2 flight.

In singles action, Iriberri defeated Angel Pizarro, 7-5, 6-2, to earn Anderson's first point of the match at the No. 5 spot to keep the Trojans alive. Newberry earned its fourth point of the day at the No. 3 flight with Jordan Monosky defeated Ascarrunz, 6-1, 6-4. Trojan senior Calhoun picked up Anderson's second point by defeating Richard Zeh, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot, giving the Black and Gold a chance with three matches to play. However, playing in the No. 1 spot, end Espana ended the match by defeating Cajzek, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 earning the fifth and final point needed to move on to the semi-finals.
