ANDERSON, S.C. - The senior duo of Steven Cooper and LJ Newman
combined for four hits, including a pair of homers, and drove in
seven runs to help lift the Anderson baseball team to a 9-3 win
over Coker in South Atlantic Conference action, Friday evening at
Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (6-11, 2-2 SAC) snapped a two-game skid with the
victory, while winning its second straight conference outing. Coker
slipped to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in the league with its second loss
in three games.
Cooper was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in the first inning
and reached base four times with a single and a pair of walks. He
score three times and drove in three runs. Newman recorded four
RBI, while posting a two-run single and an inside-the-park home run
in the eighth inning. Junior Xavier Peralta added three singles in
four trips to the plate, with senior Kyle Bailey adding a pair of
singles. Sophomore Tyler Miller chipped in a single and scored
twice.
Left-handed hurler Nick Contafio improved to 1-1 on the season,
while allowing three runs in five innings of work. The Waxhaw,
N.C., native fanned eight Cobras and walked just two. Sophomore
Andrew Dill earned his first save of the season after surrendering
just one hit and striking out five in 3 2/3 innings of
relief.
After Bailey and Miller opened the bottom of the first inning
with back-to-back singles, Cooper slammed his third home run of the
season over the fence in left field to give the Trojans an early
3-0 lead. The Cobras capitalized on a pair of Trojan miscues and
got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fifth inning, but
Anderson got the run back in the bottom of the frame with an
unearned run of its own.
Coker climbed within 4-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the
sixth inning, but the Trojans matched the output with two runs in
the bottom of the sixth to rebuild a three-run advantage. Peralta's
one-out RBI-single in the seventh inning boosted the lead to
7-3.
Cooper led off the bottom of the eighth by lacing a single back
up the middle and Newman followed by ripping a sinking line drive
to center that got past the Cobra defense and rolled to the wall,
while the Piedmont, S.C., native sprinted around the bases and beat
the relay throw to the plate to set the final score.
The Trojans and Cobras are slated to wrap up the three-game
series with a twinbill Saturday at Memorial Stadium. First-pitch is
set for 1 p.m.
