ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team was unable to
overcome five miscues on the afternoon, as Brevard rallied to
defeat the Trojans, 11-5, in South Atlantic Conference action
Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Anderson slipped to 13-19 overall and 7-8 in the conference, but
still claimed the series after sweeping Friday afternoon's
doubleheader. Brevard improved the 12-22 overall and 3-12 in the
league.
Sophomore Tyler Miller was 2-for4, with a pair of singles and a
walk in the series finale, while senior catcher LJ Newman was
2-for-5 with a single and a home run. Fellow senior Kyle Bailey
added a pair of singles.
Senior Mitchell Cooksey (3-2) absorbed the loss, while
surrendering five runs in 2/3 innings of relief, as the Trojan
defense committed four costly errors in the eighth inning. The
right-handed hurler allowed four hits.
Brevard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of
the first inning, while Anderson countered with three runs in the
bottom of the second frame to claim a brief 3-1 advantage.
Back-to-back one-out singles by Michael Rochester and Garrett
Bernardo got two runners aboard for Xavier Peralta, whose single to
left-center plated Rochester with AU's first run of the afternoon.
Stephen McKnight followed with a walk to load the bases, with
Bernardo crossing the plate on Bailey's fielder's choice. Miller's
two-out single to right field drove in McKnight to give AU a 3-1
lead.
The Tornados capitalized on four singles and plated two runs to
knot the score at three apiece in the third inning, while Newman
answered for the Trojans with his eighth home run of the season and
second in as many games with a blast over the left-field fence.
Neither team scored in the middle three innings, while AU built
its lead to 5-3 in the seventh inning when Bailey and Travis Smith
sandwiched singles around a ground out. But the Tornados countered
with eight unanswered runs over the final two innings to salvage
the third game of the series.
Anderson opens a brief two-game road swing at North Georgia on
Tuesday, with first-pitch set for 7 p.m. The nonconference contest
is slated to be televised on ESPN3.
