GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team opened a five-game
road swing with a 13-1 nonconference loss to North Greenville,
Thursday night at Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive.
Anderson fell to 8-16 on the season, while North Greenville
(18-8) won its fourth straight and earned a split of the season
series.
Senior Steven Cooper was 3-for-4 on the night, while sophomore
Tyler Miller was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Mathew Powell was also
1-for-4, as was freshman Carson Barrett. Sophomore Zach McIlroy
went 1-for-2, with Travis Smith adding a double in one trip to the
plate.
Freshman Jonah Wylie suffered the loss for the Trojans in his
first appearance on the mound for AU this season. The left-hander
surrendered four runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings
of work. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Trojans were unable to overcome four errors on the night, as
North Greenville posted four runs in the third inning, and added
another four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the
game out of reach.
AU got on the scoreboard with a solo run in the top of the
eighth inning, when right-fielder Garrett Bernardo opened the
inning with a walk. Sophomore Mason Covey came in to pinch run and
moved up when pinch hitter Xavier Peralta also drew a walk. The
Trojans avoided the shutout when Covey scored two batters later on
Miller's single.
North Greenville got the run back in the bottom of the frame to set
the final score.
Anderson will get back on the diamond quickly, as the Trojans will
look to get back in the win column when they open a three-game
South Atlantic Conference series with a Friday afternoon contest at
Mars Hill. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
