ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University baseball team outhit
visiting Southern Wesleyan, but the Trojans dropped a 16-11
nonconference decision to the Warriors, Tuesday afternoon at
Memorial Stadium.
Anderson slipped to 5-10 with its fourth setback in five
decisions, while Southern Wesleyan improved to 8-8 with its second
win of the season past the Trojans.
Anderson's LJ Newman scored four times and was 3-for-4 on the
afternoon, with a home run, triple, single and a walk. Senior
Steven Cooper was 3-for-5, with a two-run homer and a pair of
doubles. Junior Xavier Peralta added a pair of singles and drove in
two runs, with outfielder Garrett Bernardo notching a single and a
double in five trips to the plate. Sophomore Tyler Miller was
2-for-5 with a single and a double, while crossing the plate
twice.
Austin Smith (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs
(two earned) in 1/3 inning of relief. The right-hander walked three
Warriors.
After Miller singled with one out in the bottom of the first
inning, Cooper and Newman followed with back-to-back home runs to
give the Trojans a quick 3-0 advantage. Peralta led off the second
inning with a single to right field and scored on Matthew Powell's
one-out single back up the middle.
But Southern Wesleyan batted around in the top of the third
inning en route to plating five runs and after AU knotted the score
a five apiece with a run in the bottom of the frame, the Warriors
sent 10 batters to the plate and claimed a 10-5 lead.
Each team posted a run in the fifth and sixth innings, and
trailing by five, the Trojans battled back within 11-9 with three
runs in the seventh frame. Miller led off the frame with a double
to the gap in left-center and following one-out walks to Newman and
freshman Carson Barrett, Bernardo ripped a bases-loaded double to
left. Peralta followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Barrett.
Southern Wesleyan added three runs in the eighth and two more in
the ninth, with the Trojans countering with a pair of runs in their
final at-bat to set the final score.
Anderson will get back on the diamond Wednesday, when the
Trojans welcome North Georgia to Memorial Stadium. First-pitch is
scheduled for 3 p.m.
