HARROGATE, Tenn. - Paced by freshman Carson Barrett's two home
runs and eight RBI on the afternoon, the Anderson baseball team
avenged Saturday's setbacks by pounding out 18 hits, including nine
for extra bases in a 24-10 rout of Lincoln Memorial in South
Atlantic Conference play, Sunday afternoon at Lamar Hennon
Field.
Anderson improved to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the conference,
while Lincoln Memorial fell to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAC.
The 18 hits marked a season high for the Black and Gold, with
sophomore Tyler Miller leading the way with three singles, a walk
and a two-run homer in the third inning, while crossing the plate
three times. Barrett finished the afternoon going 3-for-4 with a
three-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the eighth
inning, while adding an RBI-single in the ninth and three walks on
the day. Right-fielder Garrett Bernardo added a two-run homer, a
double sand a single, with Zach McIlroy notching a double and a
single and driving in three runs. Senior Kyle Bailey posted a
single and a two-RBI double in the eighth inning.
On the mound, Thomas Smith (1-2) benefitted from the offensive
explosion, while tossing 3 2/3 innings and surrendering eight
earned runs on 10 hits.
Anderson used five runs in the first inning, one in the second,
five in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, seven in
the eighth and three in the ninth inning to post its highest run
output since a 22-16 SAC win over Mars Hill on Feb. 14, 2015.
Anderson will get back on the diamond Tuesday, when the Trojans
welcome Southern Wesleyan to Memorial Stadium for the second time
this season. First-pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Trojans and
Warriors already battled through a midweek slugfest of their own
back on Feb. 10, when SWU claimed a 15-10 victory.
