Trojans Rally to Top Limestone

Box Score Box score

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Using a balanced offensive attack at the plate, Anderson rallied with four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Limestone, 9-6, in nonconference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Founders FCU Stadium.

Less than 24 hours after stumbling on the road at Emmanuel, the Trojans improved to 3-4 on the season by outhitting Limestone, 14-7, and capitalizing on three errors by the Saints' defense to halt Limestone's four-game win streak. The Saints fell to 7-4 on the season.

Right fielder Garrett Bernardo and junior Xavier Peralta each posted three hits on the afternoon, with Bernardo adding a walk, an RBI and one run scored. Peralta crossed the plate twice. Senior Kyle Bailey was on base four times with a single and a double to go along with a pair of walks, while scoring three times from his leadoff spot. Sophomore Michael Rochester belted his second home run of the season - a three-run shot in the seventh, with junior Stephen McKnight posting a pair of singles, an RBI and a run scored. Senior Steven Cooper drove in two runs.

Sophomore Andrew Dill (1-0) earned the win after allowing just one run on one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. The right-hander walked three batters and struck out two. Senior Brock Goodling collected his second save of the campaign by tossing a perfect ninth inning.

The Trojans opened an early four-run lead, courtesy of two runs in each of the first two innings.

Bailey worked a lead-off walk to begin the game and promptly swiped second with his second stolen base of the season. One out later, the Logansville, Ga. native was in scoring position and crossed the plate when the Saints' defense misplayed Cooper's grounder to the left side. Senior LJ Newman followed with a double to left field, moving Cooper to third and the first baseman scored on Bernardo's single through the left side.

The Trojan bats stayed hot into the second frame, as junior Peralta led off with a single through the left side and moved into scoring position when Bailey reached base for the second straight inning with a single to center. Both runners moved up on sophomore Tyler Miller's groundout and both scored when Limestone's defense again misplayed Cooper's hard-hit grounder, boosting the Trojan advantage to 4-0 after two innings.

The Saints got on the scoreboard with a solo run in the bottom of the third, while AU got that run back less than an inning later, when Bailey ripped a double to center and crossed the plate on Cooper's sacrifice fly, boosting the Black and Gold's advantage to 5-1.

But the Saints evened the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the fifth inning before the Trojans answered with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a lead they would not relinquish. Bernardo beat out an infield single to lead off the inning and went all the way to third when the Saints threw the ball away trying to double him up on Travis Smith's line out. After McKnight singled to bring Bernardo home, Peralta was drilled by an inside pitch and sophomore Rochester hammered a three-run homer beyond the fence in left field to give AU a 9-5 advantage heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Limestone trimmed the Trojans' lead to three on Chase Allen's one-out solo home run in the bottom of the inning, but Trojan relievers Cody Sheffield and Goodling did not allow a Limestone batter to reach base over the final two innings.

Anderson returns to the Electric City for a three-game series with Winston-Salem State this weekend. First-pitch for Saturday's twinbill versus the Rams is set for 1 p.m.
