ANDERSON, S.C. - After capturing a wire-to-wire win over Augusta
in the final game of a three-game series last Sunday and facing
Emmanuel later today, the Anderson University baseball team wraps
up a five-game road swing by visiting Conference Carolinas-foe
Limestone on Wednesday. First-pitch versus the Saints at Founders
FCU Stadium in Gaffney, S.C. is set for 2 p.m.
The Trojans
Anderson (2-3) snapped an early-season three-game skid with
Sunday's road win and are looking to build momentum as they open a
three-game series by playing host to Winston-Salem State this
weekend at Memorial Stadium.
Heading into this afternoon's contest in Franklin Springs, Ga.,
a trio of Trojans are hitting above .400 on the season, while two
more are over .300 at the plate. Junior Xavier Peralta is leading
the way at the plate with a .462 batting average, while sophomore
Zach McIlroy is hitting .455, with a team-high .727 slugging
percentage and a .500 on-base average. Senior first baseman Steven
Cooper is 9-for-21 (.429) at the plate, while ripping a team-high
five doubles and driving home seven runs. Cooper and junior Matthew
Powell are each 3-for-7 at the plate with runners in scoring
position.
Senior LJ Newman has five RBI in five games and is hitting .368,
with senior Kyle Bailey posting a .316 batting average.
On the hill, juniors Ryan Owens and Chris Ayers have collected
the Trojans' wins on the season, while senior Brock Goodling earned
a save in AU's 6-2 win over the Jaguars. Ayers gave up just one
hit, while striking out seven in five innings of work at Augusta.
Goodling has tossed four innings in three relief appearances and
has notched five strikeouts with one walk and has limited opponents
to a 0.83 batting average.
The Saints
Limestone, which is in the midst of playing 17-of-18 games at home
in February, is 7-3 overall and is a stellar 7-1 at home on the
young season after reeling off seven straight wins following two
season-opening losses at Francis Marion.
Redshirt sophomore Anders DeShields became the first Saints
pitcher in nearly two years to earn Conference Carolinas Pitcher of
the Week accolades a week ago, while freshman third baseman Chase
Allen was selected Monday as the league's Player of the Week
following a solid weekend series against LIU Post. Allen batted
.385 in the four-game series sweep over the Pioneers and finished
with a home run, two doubles, seven RBIs, and five runs scored to
help guide the Blue and Gold to its best start since 2013. The
freshman leads the Saints with a pair of home runs, six doubles and
13 RBI over the first 10 games.
DeShields tossed seven scoreless frames with eight strikeouts
while only surrendering two base hits over a seven-day span.

home win, while shortstop Kyle Bailey added two hits on the day,
including an RBI single. Catcher Travis Smith clubbed AU's lone

and a run scored.
The contest in Gaffney saw third baseman McIlroy lead AU with a
3-for-4 performance with a run scored and a pair of stolen bases.
