ANDERSON, S.C. - Visiting Southern Wesleyan using a seven-run
seventh inning and outslugged Anderson, 15-10, in nonconference
baseball action, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Anderson slipped to 1-1 on the young season, while Southern
Wesleyan improved to 5-0.
Despite the wind chill hovering in the upper 20s, the bats were
hot for both teams, as they combined for 30 base hits on the
afternoon, including four for extra bases. Each team committed
three errors on the frigid afternoon, while the Warriors posted 18
of the base hits.
Junior Matthew Powell led the Trojans at the plate, going
2-for-3 with a pair of singles and was also hit by a pitch in the
sixth inning. Right fielder Garrett Bernardo was 3-for-5 on the
day, with a solo home run and drove in two more runs with a single
and a triple, while crossing the plate twice. Senior catcher LJ
Newman added a pair singles and two RBI in four at-bats, while
Xavier Peralta posted a pair of singles and a walk. Senior first
baseman Steven Cooper recorded a double and a single in four
at-bats.
Junior left-hander Colby Tollison (0-1) absorbed the loss after
surrendering six runs in 2/3 of an inning in relief.
The Warriors struck first, posting four runs in the top of the
second inning, while AU countered with a pair of runs in the bottom
of the frame. Bernardo led off the inning with his first home run
of the season, while sophomore Tyler Miller plated the Trojans'
second run with a sacrifice fly to right that brought home Steven
McKnight.
The Trojans knotted the score at 4-4 with two more runs in the
bottom of the third inning and took a brief one-run lead in the
bottom of the fourth when Miller posted his second RBI of the
afternoon by lifting a fly ball to center that scored Peralta.
But Southern Wesleyan answered with one run in the fifth inning,
three in the sixth and seven in the seventh inning to put the game
out of reach. The Trojans set the final score by posting a solo run
in the eighth inning when Cooper led off with his fourth double of
the season and came around to score when Newman ripped a single to
left.
Anderson opens a five-game road swing with a Friday afternoon
twinbill at Augusta. First-pitch versus the Jaguars is slated for
noon.
