ANDERSON, S.C. - After sweeping through the doubles round,
Anderson University men's tennis continued its winning ways in the
singles portion, as the Trojans opened their fall schedule with a
9-0 shutout over Emmanuel Friday afternoon at the brand new AU
Tennis Complex.
With the victory, AU moves to 1-0 on the season with a pair of
matches left on its fall schedule that will count towards its
overall record.
In the doubles round, senior Inaki Iriberri and newcomer Ramiro
Urreta put the Trojans on the scoreboard with an 8-3 win at the No.
3 position, while senior Mateo Rivas and junior Juan Carracedo held
off Enrique Alcacer and Lucas Pereira at the No. 2 spot, 8-4.
Rounding out the portion, senior Paul Michael Calhoun and Nicolas
Ascarrunz grabbed an 8-6 victory over Braden Anglin and Lukas
Konigs at No. 1, sealing a 3-0 score heading into singles.
The wins continued in the singles round, as Ascarrunz cruised to
a 6-1, 6-2 win over Pereira at No. 2, while Carracedo knocked off
Anglin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1. Calhoun closed his perfect afternoon with
a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Louis Malejka, while Rivas needed three
sets to claim a triumph over Alcacer, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6, at No. 3.
Rounding out the singles portion, Urreta earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory
over Tyler Terrell and Iriberry closed the round with a 6-3, 6-2
win over Austin Spivey.
The Trojans return to the courts on Saturday with a scrimmage
against Newberry at 10 a.m., followed by a doubleheader with
Southern Wesleyan (11 a.m.) and Limestone (4 p.m.) on Saturday,
Sept. 26.
