DAHLONEGA, Ga. - In Anderson University baseball's final
regular-season road trip of the 2015, the Trojans dropped a pair of
nonconference contests, falling to No. 19 North Georgia in a
doubleheader, 10-1 and 5-4, Wednesday evening at Bob Stein
Stadium.
With the back-to-back setbacks, the Trojans stumble to 18-27 for
the season as they return to South Atlantic Conference action on
Friday. The Nighthawks, who cracked the top-20 in the Collegiate
Baseball NCAA Division II Poll for the first time in four seasons,
improve to 29-11 overall.
Three AU hitters knocked home runs for the evening, as junior
catcher LJ Newman put AU on the scoreboard for the first time in
the opener with a solo shot. In the final game, junior outfielder
Garrett Bernardo connected on his second home run in three games
with a third inning blast to open the third frame of the final game
of the twin bill.
Rounding out the home run list for the Black and Gold was senior
shortstop Brett Cash who tied the second game, 4-4, with a
three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. For Cash, the
home run was his fifth of the season.
Despite the Cash homer, North Georgia plated a run in the sixth
inning to put the game out of reach. After UNG designated hitter Bo
Edwards doubled to lead off the sixth, outfielder Andrew Gordon
singled and brought home Edwards to hand the home side the eventual
game-winning run and the nonconference victory.
Bernardo finished the doubleheader with a trio of hits,
headlined by the home run and a 3-for-3 contest in the final game
of the day. Brother, graduate student Nick Bernardo, finished with
a pair of singles, as the brothers combined for a 5-for-5
performance in the final contest. Freshman third baseman Tyler
Miller ended the doubleheader 2-for-5 with two singles, while Cash
rounded out the group of Trojans with two hits for the day, as the
shortstop went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.
Edwards led the UNG offense with a 3-for-3 performance in the
final game of the evening, while catcher Sam Tidaback went 2-for-3
with a pair of runs scored.
Anderson shifts its focus to the weekend with a key conference
series with Lincoln Memorial to close out its league schedule. The
three-game series opens up on Friday at 6 p.m. from Memorial
Stadium, with the final two games wrapping up on Saturday with a
doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
