HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Totaling an astounding 36 hits on the day,
Anderson University baseball picked up a pair of victories, as the
Trojans defeated Coker 19-6 and 13-8 for a South Atlantic
Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Tom J. New Baseball
Field.
With the back-to-back victories, AU improves to 9-8 on the year
with a 7-4 mark in conference play, while the Cobras drop to 5-10
with a 1-7 record in the SAC.
The Trojans tallied 36 hits with 32 runs scored and 26 RBI on
the day. Leading the team with hits on the day was catcher LJ
Newman with six, as he pounded out three doubles with two RBI and
four runs scored. Juniors Steven Cooper and Garrett Bernardo added
five hits apiece, as Bernardo added a double, a triple, a pair of
RBI and five runs scored. Cooper notched three RBI and three runs
scored.
Nick Bernardo and Kyle Bailey claimed four hits apiece for the
afternoon, as the tandem combined for six runs scored and eight
RBI. Travis Smith recorded three hits, including a double and a
triple, while scoring four times and driving in two runs.
Senior Brett Cash blasted AU's lone home run on the day for his
first homer of the season.
Four Trojan pitchers saw action on the hill, as right-hander
David Thompson picked up the win in the opener by tossing seven
complete innings and striking out seven Coker hitters. Freshman
Jonah Wylie closed the door on the Cobras in the opener by
completing the final two innings and totaled two strikeouts.
In the final game of the afternoon, right-hander Cody Sheffield
earned the start and completed 2.1 innings and struck out one while
allowing six hits. Reliever Mitchell Cooksey earned the win by
completing 4.2 innings and posting four strikeouts and walking
none.
In the first game of the day, the Trojans scored six runs in the
second and fifth innings, as they produced the second-most runs in
a game this season with 19. AU's top four hitters in the starting
lineup notched multi-hit games, headlined by Newman's three-hit
contest.
For the nightcap, the Trojans used a five-run fifth inning and
20 hits to earn the 13-8 victory. Smith, Cooper Bernardo and Newman
all had three-hit games, while every hitter in the AU lineup
claimed a hit.
The Trojans seek the series sweep on Sunday when they square off
against Coker from New Field. First pitch is scheduled for
noon.
