GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Tusculum left-hander Placido Torres tossed
6.1 innings of no-hit ball before going the distance and earning
the complete-game shutout, as Anderson University baseball was
blanked by South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum, 4-0, Friday
evening at Pioneer Park.
With the setback, the Trojans move to an even 15-15 record on
the season, 9-10 in league play, as they have dropped their last
four SAC matchups. The Pioneers improve to 17-10 on the season with
an 11-5 mark in the conference and captured their third win in
their last four games.
Torres shined throughout the contest, as he held the Black and
Gold to just two hits and added 12 strikeouts for his first
complete game of the season. The lone AU batters to post hits were
junior first baseman Steven Cooper, who broke up Torres' no-hit bid
with a looping single into right field in the seventh inning, and
senior shortstop Brett Cash, who followed the first baseman two
hitters later and knocked a single into right-center field for
Anderson's final hit of the contest.
After four scoreless innings to open the evening, Tusculum
crossed two runs in the bottom of the fifth on AU starter,
right-hander Spencer Earle. First baseman Jeremiah Tullidge doubled
down the left-field line and scored outfielder Andrew Bowerman,
while Tullidge eventually crossed the plate on a single from Jim
Tolle to give TC a narrow 2-0 edge after five innings.
The home side added a run in the sixth and seventh innings to
seal the victory, as the Pioneers claimed eight hits for the
contest. Tolle, who was named the designated hitter for the game,
led Tusculum with a pair of hits and two RBI, while Tullidge
scorched a double and a single with a run scored and one RBI.
Outfielder Jalen Shuffler tallied TC's only triple of the game
coming in the sixth inning, where he eventually scored on a
sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Scott Gibson.
Earle tossed four scoreless innings before Tusculum found the
scoreboard and completed 5.1 innings while recording four
strikeouts. Relievers Mitchell Cooksey and Austin Smith finished
the conference contest with a combined 2.2 innings and allowed just
three combined hits.
Anderson looks to get back on track on Saturday when the
three-game series with TC comes to a close with a doubleheader from
Pioneer Park. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 1
p.m.
