BELMONT, N.C. - Capturing wins in five of the six singles
matches, Anderson University men's tennis fended off Conference
Carolinas opponent Belmont Abbey, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the
Reidy Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Trojans move to a perfect 2-0 record on
the young season, while the Crusaders drop their first match of the
spring season.
The Black and Gold took two of the three matches in the doubles
round, as the pair of Nicolas Ascarrunz and Paul Michael Calhoun
knocked off Eduardo Escobar and James Delaney, 8-6, at the No.2
spot, while AU's Inaki Iriberry and Alex Wallace defeated Nikhil
Reddy and Damien Nelson at No. 3, 8-3.
With a 2-1 lead after the doubles round, three Trojans won their
respective matches in straight sets as Wallace headlined the trio
with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Nelson at No. 6. At No. 4, Calhoun
defeated Escobar 6-2, 6-0, while Iriberry took down Reddy 6-3, 6-3
at No. 5.
Winning in three sets, Ascarrunz tallied a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 triumph
over Delaney at No. 3 and sophomore Mateo Rivas notched a 7-5, 2-6,
10-8 win over Juan Baez at the No. 2 position.
Anderson opens its South Atlantic Conference schedule on Sunday
when it hosts Coker. The first serve is slated for 1 p.m.
