ANDERSON, S.C. - Totaling just four hits in a 3-2 setback to open the day, Anderson University baseball bounced back with a 5-1 victory to avoid the sweep, as Carson-Newman took two-of-three from the Trojans in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series on Saturday at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

With the split, the Black and Gold move to an even 7-7 record for the season with a 5-4 mark in conference play and sit alone in fifth place in the current SAC standings. The Eagles have won five of their last six games after AU snapped their winning streak and move to 8-4 on the year.

Leadoff hitter Kyle Bailey was the lone Trojan to post hits in both games on the day, as he recorded identical 1-for-4 performances in each contest. Redshirt junior Travis Smith headlined the first game of the day with his second home run of the season but went 0-for-2 in the second game after pinch hitting for Shawn Delmontagne in the fourth inning.

In the final meeting on Saturday, two AU hitters recorded multi-hit games as first baseman Steven Cooper and outfielder Stephen McKnight added a pair of hits, while freshman third baseman Tyler Miller recorded an RBI double in the sixth inning to hand Anderson its first lead of the series.

Miller's extra-base hit began a four-run inning for the Black and Gold and they held the Eagles to just one run on three hits. Junior right-hander Cody Sheffield shined on the mound for AU, tossing his first complete game in an Anderson uniform. The junior completed seven innings and struck out three C-N hitters while maintaining C-N to its lowest hit total in a game this season.

Following Miller's double in the key sixth inning, Cooper drove three home with a single that would essentially seal the victory for the Trojans. Overall, Delmontagne, Ryan Flynn and LJ Newman all totaled hits in the final game of the afternoon.

Anderson returns to its nonconference schedule on Tuesday when it plays host to North Georgia. First pitch from Memorial Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
