ANDERSON, S.C. - Headlined by right-hander Spencer Earle's eight
strikeouts on the mound, Anderson University baseball used 11 hits
on the offensive side to claim a 12-3 victory over Limestone in
nonconference action on Thursday at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
The win is the Trojans' second in as many days, as they improve
to 3-4 on the season with their grueling four-day span with five
games coming to a close this weekend. On the opposite end, the
Saints have dropped two of their last three contests and fall to an
even 3-3 mark on the season.
In his seven innings of work, Earle earned his first victory of
the season with eight strikeouts and just two walks. The senior
allowed just one earned run on a solo home run by LC's first
baseman, Kyle Booth, in the top of the third. From there, Earle
blanked the Saints for his remaining four innings to earn the
triumph. Freshman relievers John McMicking and Johan Wylie closed
the door on the visitors and secured the nonconference victory.
Offensively, junior outfielder Garrett Bernardo provided a spark
with three extra-base hits on the day, headlined by an RBI double
in the fourth that was part of a three-run inning, and a two-run
triple in the eighth to round out Anderson's scoring on the day.
Junior shortstop Kyle Bailey added two hits on the day, including
an RBI single in the second inning to bring the score to 4-0.
Making his first start at Memorial Stadium, catcher Travis Smith
clubbed AU's lone home run for the game, as he blasted the first
pitch he saw in the seventh inning to put the Trojans ahead, 9-1.
Prior to the homer, Smith drove in three runs with a double to the
right-field wall in the first inning, as the redshirt junior
finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
The quartet of Steven Cooper, LJ Newman, Brett Cash and Anthony
Carco all tallied hits on the day, as Newman's triple to lead off
the third inning would be the only extra-base hit of the group.
Newman would eventually score in the inning to give Anderson a 5-1
lead after three innings on a Cash ground out.
For the game, the Trojans posted runs in six of their eight
offensive innings, as they have recorded double-figure runs in
their first two home games of the season. The back-to-back
double-figure run totals marks the first time since the 2012 season
that an AU team has posted at least 10 or more runs in consecutive
games.
The Black and Gold return to action on Friday when they jump
back into South Atlantic Conference play, as they welcome Mars Hill
to the Electric City for a three-game series. First pitch from
Memorial Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
