ANDERSON, S.C. - Unable to find any team points for the first
time this season, Anderson University men's tennis dropped to No. 6
Columbus State, 9-0, Thursday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Memorial
Courts.
The Trojans suffer their first setback of the season and move to
3-1 overall, while the Cougars remain perfect on the year and
improve to 4-0. Despite the loss, AU is still off to its best start
to a season since joining the South Atlantic Conference prior to
the 2011 spring campaign.
In doubles, CSU's team of Adi Malicbegovic and Marco Almorin
knocked off Anderson's Juan Carracedo and Mateo Rivas, 8-4, at the
No. 1 spot, while Benedikt Wilde and Maciej Kierkus continued
Columbus State's winning ways with an 8-6 victory over Nicolas
Ascarrunz and Paul Michael Calhoun at No. 2. The Cougars made it
three straight triumphs with an 8-0 shutout from Oussama Zoghlami
and Jorge Vargas over Inaki Iriberry and Alex Wallace at No. 3.
The setbacks continued for the Black and Gold in the singles
round, as CSU claimed all six matches by straight sets and earned
the 9-0 win. The blanking marked the first time AU has dropped a
9-0 match since CSU defeated the Trojans, 9-0, on Feb. 3, 2013.
Anderson returns to the courts on Saturday when it hosts Catawba
in a SAC matchup. The first serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
