WINGATE, N.C. - Entering Saturday's doubleheader with a share of
the lead in the South Atlantic Conference standings, Anderson
University baseball suffered two setbacks in a twin bill to Wingate
Saturday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic
Field.
The Trojans fell 10-2 in the opening game and were unable to
hold onto a lead in the final game of the day, dropping 4-3 in a
seven-inning contest. With the losses, AU stumbles to 8-15 overall
and 6-5 in conference play, while the home side has now won seven
straight games and improve to 15-3 overall record and 10-3 in the
SAC. Wingate's 15 wins for the season is currently a
conference-high.
Seniors Jonathan Zalud and Paul Como tallied Anderson's only two
hits against Wingate in the opening game as the duo drove in a run
apiece. Wingate starter Olen Little tossed seven complete innings,
allowing just two hits and struck out five Trojans. For his effort,
Little earned his fifth win on the season, which ranks second in
the conference.
Following the earlier setback, AU grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top
of the third inning when senior Josh Hickman and junior Brett Cash
each tallied singles to being the inning. Hickman, who finished the
second game 2-for-3, was later brought home on a single by
sophomore Steven Cooper. Senior Nathan Galliford continued the
hitting trend with a base-clearing double on the ensuing at-bat,
which plated Cash and Cooper. For the season, Galliford ranks third
in the SAC in RBI with 26.
Despite the strong start to the second game, Anderson was unable
to find another run, as WU starter Stephen Vaughn missed going the
distance by an out, completing 6.2 innings with nine strikeouts and
three earned runs. For his efforts, the Bulldog offense scored a
run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to seal the
victory.
The Trojans look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday when they
return to Ron Christopher Stadium for the final game of the
three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
