ANDERSON, S.C. - Opening up South Atlantic Conference play on a
high note, Anderson University men's tennis came away with a 6-3
win over Newberry, Saturday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Memorial
Courts.
The victory marks AU's first of the season after dropping a 5-0
decision at Division I power Clemson on Sunday, while Newberry
falls to an even 1-1 overall record.
In doubles action, Anderson was able to post two wins, as the
freshmen tandem of Juan Carracedo and Mateo Rivas claimed an 8-4
victory over Michael Saunders and Vinivius Botelho at the No. 1
position, while sophomore Inaki Iriberry and Tomas Passalacqua
defeated Mohammed Chakir and David Sons, 8-2 at No. 3.
Heading into singles play with a 2-1 advantage, it was the
bottom of the Trojans' lineup which propelled AU to the victory. At
No. 3, Passalacqua earned his first singles victory in the Black
and Gold with a three-set 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over Newberry's
Fernando Espana. Sophomore Paul Michael Calhoun, who was slotted at
the No. 4 position, matched Passalacqua's three-set win with a 6-1,
3-6, 6-3 triumph over Chakir.
Iriberry and senior Danilo Faria earned straight set victories
at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, as Iriberry knocked off Carolis
Nicolopulous 7-5, 6-1 and Faria grabbed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over
Sons.
The victory increased AU's winning streak over the Wolves since
the Trojans joined the SAC to four straight matches.
Anderson returns to action on Wednesday as it begins a
three-match road swing beginning at Peach Belt Conference opponent
GRU Augusta. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
