DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Despite out-hitting North Georgia 9-8 for the
afternoon, Anderson University baseball dropped to Peach Belt
Conference foe UNG in the opening game of a three-game set, 6-2,
Friday evening at Bob Stein Stadium.
With the setback, the Trojans drop their third straight game
after taking 2-of-3 from South Atlantic Conference foe
Carson-Newman last weekend. North Georgia improves to 6-4 for the
year.
Headlining the AU lineup was sophomore middle infielder Kyle
Bailey who finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Bailey is now
5-for-8 in his last two games and hitting .360 with a .418 on-base
percentage as Anderson's leadoff batter.
Classmates Steven Cooper and Garrett Bernardo each posted two
hits for the evening, as the duo posted AU's only extra-base hits
for the game. Cooper added on to his hitting streak with a 2-for-4
night with two doubles, as the first baseman now has a hit in nine
straight ballgames. Bernardo tallied the Trojans' first triple of
the season in the seventh inning, as the transfer from the
University of Maine is now hitting .316 with a .447 slugging
percent for the year.
Left fielder Nathan Galliford and shortstop Brett Cash each
notched a hit, as Galliford has now recorded a hit in his last four
contests. During the stretch, Galliford is hitting .417 with a .500
slugging percentage.
North Georgia's Andrew Gordon paced the Nighthawks with a
3-for-4 performance, adding two RBI. Leadoff hitter Tremayne Toorie
finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while shortstop Joey
Cecere knocked an RBI double in the fourth inning en route to two
UNG runs.
After Anderson took a 1-0 lead after a Cash single, scoring
Bailey, North Georgia scored three runs in the third, two runs in
the fifth and an extra insurance run in the fifth to put the game
out of reach. The Trojans would try to make a comeback in the
seventh when Bernardo scored on an LJ Newman sacrifice fly. After
the run, AU was unable to cross the plate against for the rest of
the evening.
Nighthawk starter Brandon Agar tossed seven complete innings and
struck out 10 Trojans, giving up just one walk en route to his
third win of the season. Agar is now a perfect 3-0 for the season
and carries a 1.32 ERA for the young season.
Anderson looks to even the series on Saturday when the teams
lock up for the second day of a three-day set. First pitch is set
for 1 p.m.
